AC Variable Frequency and Servo Drives

Variable frequency drives adjust the speed of an AC motor by changing the supply frequency. In pump and fan applications, controlling flow by speed rather than by throttling delivers substantial energy savings, while on conveyors and machine tools they provide soft acceleration and precise speed control. Servo drives go a step further, using feedback to control position and torque. Drive selection depends on motor power and current, supply voltage, load characteristic (constant or variable torque), overload requirement and communication protocol (Modbus, PROFINET, EtherCAT).
